Doris Jean Brown

Doris Jean Brown, commonly known as DJ, Doris or Jean is the epitome of a Proverbs 31 woman of God. Doris is a wise woman. She is an encourager and inspiration to all who know her or come in contact with her. Doris is a praying woman who hungers after the Word of God like a deer pants for water. She is a smart woman and loving mother of Lisa Ross and Renata Brown and adored wife of Curtis. Doris was born to Minnie Ruth and Tommy Sampson in 1933 in Arcadia, Louisiana. The word from her relatives is that she was a precocious and spoiled child. She loved to play outside and be the boss of her many cousins. She was bom to lead. As the only child of Minnie and Tommy she really did get everything she wanted and her parents made sure that she wanted for nothing! Doris and Curtis married on April 3,1955 in Los Angeles, California. They've been married for more than 60 years! He says he fell in love with her when he first saw her walking down the street. Now, even though 60-years is something to celebrate, we're coming together today to celebrate Doris and who she is, her achievements and what she's given to the community. She gave her life to Christ and was baptized in Arcadia at Harmony Baptist Church. She comes from a long line of accomplished musicians. Her grandmother Annie, taught the white people in the town how to play the piano. Her mother knew how to play and she ensured that Doris would also know how to play the piano. Shortly after marrying Curtis, Doris attended City College in Los Angeles and later obtained her license to become a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) while her husband was stationed at Arlington Heights Army Base in Chicago, Illinois. She worked at Thomason General Hospital and retired at the Veteran's Administration. This gifted woman of God has too many accomplishments to name, but a few are serving more than 25 years in the El Paso Chapter of the Links, Incorporated; being recognized on her job year after year as an outstanding employee; Girl Scout leader, Exemplary Woman by the El Paso Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta and has been a dedicated member of Shiloh Baptist Church for more than 43-years. She is a prayer-warrior, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, mentor, friend, avid reader and collector of salt and pepper shakers. She loves, great food, traveling, shoes, music and the arts and is known for falling asleep with a book on her chest. She is walking, talking love.
